How to Start on Fiverr in 2026: A Beginner’s Guide From a Longtime Seller

You have a skill people pay for, and you want to find out if Fiverr can turn it into side income. Good question.
The bottom line: Fiverr is a real marketplace with real buyers, and a beginner can get paid. But Fiverr keeps 20%, new sellers start with no reviews, and money takes about two weeks to clear after an order. Go in with those facts and you’ll be fine.
This guide covers how Fiverr pays, what it costs, how levels work, and how I’d set up a first gig. Everything numeric comes from Fiverr’s own help pages, linked below.
Fiverr at a glance
- What it pays: whatever you charge, minus Fiverr’s 20% cut. Fiverr doesn’t publish typical earnings for new sellers.
- Time to first dollar: roughly two to three weeks after your first completed order (my estimate, based on the clearing rules below).
- What it costs: nothing to join. You pay through the sales fee and any withdrawal fee.
- Who it’s for: people with a deliverable skill, such as writing, design or editing, who can work to a deadline.
- Skip this if… you want money this week, or you won’t answer messages quickly.
What Fiverr is, in plain words
Fiverr is a marketplace where freelancers list services called “Gigs” and buyers pay for them. Buyers pay Fiverr up front, and Fiverr holds the money until the work is done. Clients pay for orders in advance, which protects you from non-payment.
My years of Fiverr work taught me one thing early: it’s a visibility game. Buyers browse Gig cards, so how your Gig looks matters nearly as much as how well you do the work.
Who Fiverr is for
Fiverr suits people who can package a skill, such as writing, editing, design, voice work or basic video editing, into a clear service with a deadline. It also suits people who’d rather list a service and let buyers find them than send proposals.
It’s a weaker fit if you do custom, scoped work that doesn’t fit a package, or if a 20% fee is a deal-breaker.
What Fiverr costs you
The 20% service fee
Fiverr says freelancers receive 80% of the client’s cleared payment. That means a $100 order puts $80 in your balance. Price with that in mind.
Buyers pay fees too. According to Fiverr’s payment terms, the buyer service fee for Services is 5.5% as of September 2025, plus a $3.50 fee on purchases under $200. Those fees are added to the buyer’s total at checkout, not taken from your share. They can still make your Gig look pricier than a competitor’s.
Withdrawal fees
What you pay to move money out depends on the method, per Fiverr’s payout page:
| Method | Fee | Minimum | Speed |
|---|---|---|---|
| PayPal | $0 | $1 | About 24 hours |
| Bank transfer (via Payoneer) | $1 | $20 | 1 to 3 business days local; 5 to 7 for a USD wire |
| Payoneer account | $3 | $10 | Up to 2 business days |
You can withdraw up to $5,000 per transaction. Withdrawals are final once started, and you’re responsible for your own taxes. I’m not a tax pro, so ask one about your situation. This is general information, not financial advice.
The free option is PayPal. If your first order is $50, you keep $40 and the PayPal withdrawal costs nothing.
Skip this if… a 20% cut on every sale is a deal-breaker. Selling on your own site avoids it, but then you have to find your own buyers.
How and when you get paid
- You deliver the work with the Deliver button.
- The buyer has three days to respond. If they don’t, the order completes automatically.
- Your earnings clear 14 days after completion. Some programs, such as Seller Plus and Fiverr Pro, clear in 7 days.
- You request a withdrawal.
There are also waiting periods. Fiverr lists 24 hours after your first withdrawal, 24 hours after adding or changing a payout method, and 48 hours after updating your phone number.
Put together, expect roughly two to three weeks from a first completed order to money in your account. That’s my estimate based on those rules. Don’t plan to pay rent with your first sale.
Step by step: starting on Fiverr
1. Pick a service you can actually deliver
Start with something specific. “Logo design” is crowded. “Logo design for local restaurants” tells a buyer you understand their world. Think about what you can do well, what buyers already search for, and what you can finish on time.
Common beginner categories include writing, editing, design, voice work and basic video editing. For a broader look at what pays, see my guide to 25 legit side hustles.
2. Build your profile and first Gig
New freelancers can list up to 4 Gigs. That’s plenty. Make them count:
- Title: say exactly what you do and for whom.
- Description: explain what the buyer gets and what you need from them.
- Packages: offer a simple basic, standard and premium tier.
- Samples: you can add a portfolio and an intro video to your profile from day one.
- Honesty: don’t promise what you can’t deliver. Bad reviews hurt more than a slow start.
3. Set prices that survive the fee
Work backward. If you want to keep $40 and Fiverr keeps 20%, price at $50. Remember the buyer’s fees get added on top of your price.
4. Answer fast and deliver on time
Fiverr tracks how often you reply to new messages within 24 hours over the last 90 days. That “response rate” is one of the six metrics behind levels.
5. Keep everything on Fiverr
Don’t take clients off the platform to dodge the fee. Fiverr says behavior meant to bypass its policies can exclude you from the level system. Account risk isn’t worth 20%.
Skip this if… you can’t commit to checking messages daily. Slow replies hurt your standing.
How Fiverr levels work
Levels matter because Fiverr shows them on Gig cards, and higher levels unlock features. Fiverr says your level is based on six metrics: Success Score, rating, response rate, orders, unique clients and earnings.
| Level | Orders | Unique clients | Earnings | Rating | Response rate |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Level 1 | 5 | 3 | $400 | 4.4+ | 80% |
| Level 2 | 20 | 10 | $2,000 | 4.6+ | 90% |
| Top Rated | 40 | 20 | $10,000 | 4.7+ | 90% |
Success Score minimums are 5+, 7+ and 9+. Top Rated also needs a manual review. You must meet all six metrics for a level, and Fiverr says you move up within 24 hours of qualifying.
Benefits grow as you climb. Level 1 allows 10 Gigs, subscriptions and Fiverr Ads. Top Rated allows 30 Gigs, early payout access and priority support.
Notice what the numbers imply. Level 1 needs $400 across at least 3 different clients. For a beginner, that’s a real goal, but it won’t happen in a weekend.
Optional tools, and whether you need them
Fiverr’s level table lists extras you unlock as you grow. Level 1 sellers can use Fiverr Ads and become eligible for Seller Plus Standard. Level 2 adds paid consultations and Seller Plus Premium.
You don’t need any of them on day one. Get your first few orders and reviews first. Then decide if paying for visibility makes sense, once you know what an order is worth to you.
Skip this if… you haven’t sold anything yet. Ads before reviews usually waste money.
Before you publish: a quick checklist
- Can you describe what the buyer gets in one sentence?
- Have you priced it so you’re happy with 80% of the amount?
- Do you have two or three samples you made yourself?
- Have you picked a payout method? PayPal is the free one.
- Have you set aside time for messages every day?
What a beginner can realistically expect
Fiverr doesn’t publish average earnings for new sellers, and I won’t invent one. What I can say, in my experience, is that the first few orders are the hardest. You have no reviews, buyers are cautious, and you compete with sellers who have hundreds.
Ways to get through the early stretch:
- Price fairly, not at rock bottom. In my experience, the cheapest Gigs attract the most demanding buyers.
- Over-communicate. Confirm details before you start.
- Ask satisfied buyers to leave a review, politely and once.
- Use your slow time to improve your portfolio samples.
If a platform is too slow for you, compare it with the alternative. My Upwork vs Fiverr guide covers how fees and client types differ.
How much time Fiverr takes
Fiverr doesn’t publish a time commitment. Here’s how I’d plan it (my estimates):
- Setup: time to write your Gig, packages and profile, and gather samples.
- Daily: checking messages, since Fiverr tracks whether you reply to new messages within 24 hours.
- Per order: the work itself, plus back-and-forth with the buyer.
- First payout: roughly two to three weeks after your first completed order.
Privacy and security on Fiverr
- Keep conversations and payments on Fiverr. Fiverr says behavior meant to bypass its policies can exclude you from the level system, and it can block withdrawals to prevent fraud.
- Choose a payout method you control. PayPal and Payoneer both work. Withdrawals are final once started.
- Be wary of buyers who ask for personal details or payment outside Fiverr. Honest buyers don’t need your Social Security number or bank login.
- Know the fake check scam. The FTC says a check you deposit and then send part of back is a scam. Its job scam page explains.
- Use a unique password and turn on two-factor sign-in if offered.

Our assessment of Fiverr
Research verified: based on published company terms, not independently tested by us.
| Criterion | Score | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Ease of getting started | 3 / 5 | Free to join, but a clear Gig, samples and your first reviews take effort. |
| Earning potential | 3 / 5 | You set your prices, and Fiverr publishes no typical earnings for new sellers. |
| Time investment | 3 / 5 | Gig setup, then daily message checks to keep your response rate up. |
| Payment reliability | 4 / 5 | Clients pay up front. Earnings clear 14 days after completion, or 7 for some programs. |
| Fees and restrictions | 2 / 5 | A 20% service fee. PayPal withdrawals are free, and other methods cost $1 to $3. |
| Privacy | 3 / 5 | Keep clients and payments on Fiverr. Payouts go through PayPal or Payoneer. |
Alternatives worth considering
- Upwork. You send proposals to client job posts. The fee is 0% to 15%, but you pay for Connects. I compare them in Upwork vs Fiverr.
- Your own clients. Selling on your own avoids the 20% cut, but you have to find buyers.
- Niche platforms. For tutoring, Wyzant keeps a 25% fee. For pet care, Rover keeps 20%.
- Other side hustles. If freelancing is too slow, local work or selling items can pay sooner. See 25 legit side hustles.
Grant’s take
Fiverr is a decent place to practice selling a skill and collect your first reviews. It’s not a quick win. Expect a slow start, a 20% cut, and a two-week wait before your first payout. If you can live with that and you treat each order like a real client project, it can turn into steady side income over time. If not, local work or a different platform may fit better.
Mistakes to avoid
- Offering too many services. One clear Gig beats four vague ones.
- Underpricing. After a 20% fee, a very low price can leave you working for pennies.
- Copying other sellers’ work or samples. It’s against the rules and buyers can tell.
- Ignoring the rules. Fiverr can hold withdrawals or limit your account for policy issues. Its payment terms say it can temporarily block withdrawals to prevent fraud or meet legal requirements.
- Linking one PayPal or payout account to two Fiverr accounts. Fiverr allows only one account per payout provider.
Skip this if… you plan to run multiple accounts. Fiverr’s rules don’t allow it.

Your next step
Write down one service you could deliver this week, then draft your Gig title and three packages in a document before you touch Fiverr. If it reads clearly there, it will read clearly on the platform. Then open your Fiverr account and publish the first Gig. This is general information, not financial advice.
